ALBA AU MATIN was awarded a grant from the Médiathèque Valais-Martigny and the Fondazione Margherita, created to support artists bridging the gap between art school and a professional practice. Awarded by competition to graduates of Swiss art academies, the grant invited filmmakers to draw on the Médiathèque’s audiovisual heritage collections — photographs, film and sound archives — through the lens of italianità in Valais.

SYNOPSIS

The voice of a young woman with an Italian accent is heard over a patchwork of archival footage. Texts inspired by the memories of Maria Demontis, a former worker, tell the story of her adolescence at the age of fifteen in an intimate way. When she left Italy, Maria left behind the world of her childhood. In Switzerland, she discovered adult life, the life of a foreigner.
