Keeping them in their place

is a feature-length experimental silent film.

As a collaborative project, the film was premiered with orchestral accompaniment at the opening ceremony on 05 May 2017 within the framework of the music festival „CRESCENDO“ at UdK concert hall, Hardenbergstrasse. The sinfonic orchestra of University of Arts plays Lorin Maazel‘s version of „The Ring Without Words“, an abridged summary of the musical highlights of Richard Wagner‘s „The Ring of the Nibelung“. „Keeping Them in Their Place“ tackles racist aspects of Richard Wagner‘s tetralogy, translates them into the current and futuristic context of sexuality, femininity, racism and genetics to critically question future-oriented tendencies of In-Vitro-Fertilisation and prenatal diagnostics.

The Kryobank – Institutionalisation of reproduction

For millennia the humanity breeds plants (and animals). Breeding refers to the artificial selection and controlled reproduction of two individuals of a species that have certain desired characteristics. So should these characteristics increases and suppresses unwanted. The Act of fertilization and therefore the reproduction happens in of the future consciously and not randomly. Men and women go for it independently of each other at an exclusive place of anonymity and relaxation, where they alone can perform their exclusive fertilisations ritual in the private space of retreat. The individual modules which are necessary for a successful fecundation, and were extracted from the body some time ago and were kept in the Cryobank, lie in a D-I-Y set ready to enable. Much like at an in vitro fertilization and the related hormone treatment care must be taken here on the right rhythm and dealing with the building blocks. While they are scattered among other things stimulates or placed in the correct position. Unlike in our today‘s artificial insemination, where only a part of the process outside the body can take place, are we next a step reproduction and sexuality of body, sex and reproduction in the future with the absolute separation: If successful, new life in an external womb grows up. The extraction and following etention of the elements for creating life plays an essential role in the future. „Social freezing“ of egg cells is technically more challenging but sperm is easy to kryo-preserve. All male and femal individual between 18 and 25 years in age, their phase of best quality reproduction genes, must pass a morphological, physical, anatomical and genetical examination. This process is similar to a mustering. This once-in-a-life examination is legally defined and culturally established. The verification is a landmark in each individual‘s life, it represents the The Graduate to a hedonistic infertile indivdual. The Kryobank is the „cloud“ for fertile cells, the male and female features for reproduction. At the same time Kryobank collects big data that makes the individual more transparent than ever before.

The In-Vitro Hotel – Creation of Life: Do-It-Yourself

The Cell – The new human

With in vitro fertilization, preimplantation genetic diagnosis can detect chromosome damage as well as hundreds of a total of four thousand monogenic genetic diseases, in addition, the determination of genetic risk factors such as breast cancer, etc. From the genome can also be read eye color and hair color, estimated height and sex of the unborn child, and the likelihood of developing high IQs, stronger muscles or musical abilities. May we intervene in evolution in this way? The first IVF was performed in 1978, without any possible long-term consequences.
